Victory for Workers in the Rubber Industry in Mexico!

Enlace

On February 3, 2011 the government-mandated opening bargaining session was held.  All Major Tire companies where present except for Continental Tire, but the workers were able to pressure the companies present to win a government endorsed 5.25% raise among other things and to renew the contract law for another two years for the national rubber industry.

Special thanks to all allies and supporters of Mexico’s rubber workers whose participation in action alerts to pressure Continental from blocking the industry-wide master contract proved successful.  At the end Continental was not present and the contact was renewed.

CONTINENTAL TIRE TRIES TO BUST MEXICO’S RUBBER WORKERS UNIONS

TAKE ACTION!

Negotiations for the industry-wide master union contract for workers that make tires in Mexico are regulated and coordinated by Mexico’s Secretary of Labor every 2 years.
Secretary of Labor Javier Lozano has summoned Continental, Tornel-JK, Bridgestone-Firestone, Michelin, and the unions representing the workers in those global companies to attend the opening contract bargaining session on February 3, 2011.  But a few days ago, in an obvious maneuver to bust its workers’ union, Continental sought legal authority to not participate in the negotiations.

Environmental Impact of Used Tires from the US

The United States tends to see Mexico as its backyard where they often use to throw their garbage. This has been the case in relation to used tires that have been disposed of in Mexico either for reuse or as landfill mostly along the US-Mexico border.  These used tires make up for at least 22% of landfill bound tires in Mexico, totaling 6 million a year.  Some are brought legally, why the majority cross the border illegally and become a huge problem for Mexico.  While there has been plants opened to recycle tires, a great number of them have been burned which cause numerous respiratory problems to nearby residents.

Victory against Corrupt “Charro” Union

The National Union of General Tire Workers in Mexico (SNTGTM) recently defeated a corrupt “charro” union by total of 640 votes against 1 in the latest union election on August 6, 2010.  In addition the independent union also fought against the General Tire plant for illegally terminating 52 workers, thus far half of them have be reinstalled in the plant due to the efforts of the union.
Enlace is working with General Tire and Tornel Independent Unions on a campaign to defend the national contract and working standards in the rubber industry.

Workers in the Rubber Industry in Mexico

Enlace

Enlace is working with Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de Compañía Hulera Tornel and key ally Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de General Tire in a campaign to defend labor standards for thousands of workers in the rubber industry. Both unions represent workers at tire plants in Mexico and are currently organizing to reinstate workers illegally fired while fighting off corrupt company (charro) unions that threaten their rights and lower their wages. The Tornel Tire Company belongs to JK Organization, a huge multinational based in India, and the General Tire Company belongs to Continental based in Germany.
