Seafood Workers participate in annual meeting of the Secretary of Fisheries
On May 21st SINTTIM, the independent union that is fighting for illegally fired workers and to reform the squid industry, participated for the first time in a meeting to negotiate the price of squid with the Secretary of Fisheries and industry employers. This meeting takes place every year to review salaries of fishermen and seafood processing workers; they also study the current market price for squid and decide to increase or lower the price paid per pound. Participating in this meeting gave the workers a great opportunity to start reforming the squid industry so that they can secure just wages for all workers in this sector.

Seafood Workers in Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Summary of 2009
The Seafood Workers Justice Campaign has been a collaboration between SINTTIM (the independent maquiladoras workers union in Baja California Sur), CISSLABORAL (a research, education, and legal support center for workers in La Paz), and Enlace.
CECILIA VERDUGO: ONE OF THE LEADERS OF THE SEAFOOD WORKER JUSTICE FIGHT PASSES AWAY
In October 2009 we lost a great leader, Cecilia Verdugo passed away from natural causes in Santa Rosalia. She was just 47 years old and leaves behind her husband and 3 children. Cecilia was a key person in the fight for seafood workers alongside Rosa and other leaders that were illegally terminated from the squid processing plant by HANJIN.
Hurricane destroys seafood workers houses
In September 2009 Hurricane Jimena hit Baja California Sur and destroyed many homes, including that of our compañera Rosa Ceseña Ramírez, secretary general of SINTTIM and unjustly fired Hanjin México worker. Many of you know Rosa, so we are asking for your cooperation to help Rosa and her family in this difficult time. Rosa did not ask us to send this request. We the Enlace staff offered to do it.
July International Synchronized Action
In late January 2009 we launched a boycott of Hanjin and Taemin products, sending letters to Korean markets asking them to stop doing business with Hanjin and Taemin until the labor conflict between Hanjin and Seafood Workers in Santa Rosalia, BCS, Mexico, is justly resolved. We have reached an agreement with Galleria, HK, California, and City Market in Koreatown; these markets will stop doing business with Hanjin.
ILO Complaint
CISSLABORAL and SINTTIM have submitted a complaint with the International Labor Organization (ILO). The complaint is only available in spanish at the following website: http://lacasadeltrabajador.blogspot.com/2009/05/cisslaboral-y-sinttim-presentan-queja.html
Trip to La Paz and Santa Rosalía
Enlace staff, Mary Mendez and Daniel Carrillo, visited La Paz and Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur, in late March 2009. The purpose of the visit with SINTTIM (the Independent Union of Maquila Workers) and CISSLABORAL (the Center for Social, Union, and Labor Research) was to evaluate the Seafood Workers Justice Campaign, analyze current state of organizing, create a bi-national plan, and provide workers with workshops on Enlace’s organizing frameworks. In La Paz the meetings were a success because we planned out the fight for the remaining of the year.
