October National Month of Action
Protests against Wall Street & Wells Fargo’s for their Role in Immigrant Detention
National contact: Daniel Carrillo (323) 514-4048 .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
What: Protesters in 13 major cities across the country will converge on branches of Wells Fargo Bank to demand that Wells Fargo abandon its role in the nation’s rapidly expanding for-profit immigrant detention system in a National Month of Action against Wells Fargo.
Why: Over the past three years, hundreds of thousands of non-criminal immigrants have been subjected to excessively abusive treatment in for profit prisons run for the federal government by the Geo Group (GEO) and Corrections of America (CCA). Through its mutual funds, Wells Fargo is a major investor in the GEO, the nation’s second largest private prison company, and a minor shareholder in CCA, the largest. The Prison Divestment Campaign is working to pressure investors to divest from the prison industry and cut all political ties.

Action at Home of Wells Fargo CFO
POWER, ACCE, Refund California, SEIU, Enlace and allies said in a release that they were protesting outside Sloan’s home for the following reasons:
To demand that Wells Fargo divest from private prison companies that contract with the government to deport immigrant workers and redirect that money to the real economy, creating jobs, rebuilding housing and refunding government coffers.
To protest Wells Fargo for leading the major banks in peddling bad sub-prime mortgages to minority communities throughout the nation
To highlight that Wells Fargo pays the lowest corporate tax rate of any major bank (around 11 percent) and paid no taxes in 2009.

Private Prison Firms and Wells Fargo among forces behind Georgia’s HB87
For immediate Release
July 1st, 2011: Protests against Prison Industry in Solidarity with Georgia
What: Community and labor groups take to the streets on July 1st the day new anti-immigrant law is set to be implemented in Georgia. This legislation accelerates the detention of immigrants. Protesters demand that major shareholders divest their holdings in the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and the GEO Group (Geo), private prison companies that run immigrant detention centers and prisons for the U.S. government. Private Prisons and investors are set to reach record profits from HB87, having also made contributions to key politicians.
July 1st National Day of Action in Solidarity with Georgia
On July 1st the Arizona copycat law HB87 is set to be implemented in Georgia. Just like last year when SB 1070 was signed into law in Arizona, once again the private prison industry has played a powerful force in lobbying for anti-immigrant legislation for profit. Private Prisons and their investors contributed to the GA Governor, Attorney General, and the sponsor of HB87 among other key politicians.
Enlace and community partners across the US involved in the National Prison Industry Divestment Campaign are calling for a National Day of Action on July 1st in solidarity with Georgia. We will not comply! Repeal HB87!
Georgia Human Rights Summer 2011
Georgia is headed down the wrong path of Arizona and its going to take all of us to turn it around. Last summer hundreds of volunteers went to Arizona to support grassroots groups in organizing rallies and supporting the committees in defense of the barrio. This summer, people are headed to Georgia to support communities facing the impact of the Arizona copycat, HB 87, and organizing for a better world. If you can come and volunteer to do in-take on the hotline, accompany the popular assemblies, and expand human rights zones, click here to sign up. Together we can turn the tide.
May 12th National Day of Action
On May 12th organizations across the US protested against major shareholders of Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and the Geo Group, two private prisons corporations who profit from racist anti-immigrant laws like SB 1070 that criminalize communities and increase the prison population. Stop GEO Group from profiting from destroying families
On May 4th in Fort Lauderdale, Florida various immigrant rights organizations rallied outside of the Geo Group’s shareholder meeting. The Geo Group along with CCA, in league with major investors, is working to increase the criminalization of our communities to further overpopulate our prisons, through lobbying efforts that increase incarcerations by the federal government and by states such as Arizona and Georgia, which have passed legislation that accelerates the detention of immigrants.
On May 3rd various community organizations and unions participated in a rally outside of Wells Fargo shareholder meeting in San Francisco.
Wells Fargo is a major shareholder of the Geo Group. Hundreds of community members rallied outside the Wells Fargo shareholder meeting demanding they respect human rights, divest from the prison industry and stop kicking California families out of their homes.
