Occupy Wall Street: Financing AZ Copycat Bills & Profiting from Deportations

In October the Prison Divestment Campaign launched a National Month of Action. Campaign partners and allies across the US joined with Occupy Wall Street to denounce Wall Street’s role in financing and lobbying for Arizona copycat laws while making billions from incarcerating families. National actions in 13 cities protested the big banks and Wall Street financial institutions to expose them for their political financial contributions and lobbying in support of the current scapegoating and criminalization of immigrants. The actions were a great success, forming new alliances and garnering major news media coverage to include immigration in the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The momentum continues during December; in the first week of the month partners and allies took action against ALEC, a vehicle used by corporations and big banks to push their political agenda (drafting laws like SB 1070). On December 17th and 18th various cities will take to the streets in the three month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement and International Migrants Day. En Octubre la Campaña de Quitar Inversión en Prisiones lanzo un Mes Nacional de Acción. Colaboradores y Aliados de la Campaña en todo el país se unieron con Ocupar de Wall Street para denunciar el papel de Wall Street en financiar y cabildear por Leyes Copias de Arizona mientras lucrando billones de la encarcelación de familias. Acciones nacionales en 13 ciudades protestaron los grandes bancos y instituciones financieras de Wall Street para exponer sus contribuciones financieras políticas y cabildeo en apoyo de la actual criminalización de migrantes. Las acciones fueron un gran éxito, formando nuevas alianzas y logrando cobertura por los medios noticieros grandes para incluir inmigración en el movimiento de Ocupar de Wall Street.

Peer Trainer Program On Third Year Home Stretch

2011 saw a new class of Peer Trainers in the Enlace Institute. They come from organizations serving low wage communities across the United States and Mexico. This year we welcomed more than 55 new participants. These leaders learned and applied strategic collaboration tools that substantially advanced the social justice work in their communities. The Peer Trainer Program is funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation.

In addition to the basic curriculum of the Organizing Cycle (short term planning), the Rap (used for recruiting and motivating), and the Evaluation Star (evaluation and analysis of programs and activities), we are offering an advanced framework for executive directors and graduates of the 2009-2010 Peer Trainer Program. This framework, Four Sages, is a collaborative brainstorming process that is useful specifically for top leadership teams when the group is confronting a crisis with the potential to destabilize the whole organization or is facing an unanticipated barrier to its strategy.

There are still openings for the Advanced workshops to be held in early 2012 in the United States (Los Angeles, February 24) and in Mexico City (January 21). In addition, the second workshop in the Mexico series (Evaluation Star) will be held January 18-19 in Mexico City. Programa de Entrenadores Colegas en Su Tercer Año

2011 miro una nueva clase de Entrenadores Colegas en el Instituto de Enlace. Vinieron de organizaciones sirviendo comunidades de bajos recursos en EEUU y México. Esto año le dimos la bienvenida a mas de 55 nuevos participantes. Estos líderes aprendieron y aplicaron herramientas estratégicas colaborativas que substancialmente avanzaron el trabajo de justicia social en sus comunidades. El Programa de Entrenadores Colegas se puede realizar gracias a una beca de la Fundación Ford.

Adicionalmente al currículo básico del Ciclo de Organizar (planificación de corto tiempo), la Charla de Convencimiento (usado para reclutar y motivar), y la Estrella de Evaluación (evaluar y analizar programas y actividades), estamos ofreciendo un esquema avanzado para directores ejecutivos y graduados del Programa de Entrenadores Colegas del 2009- 2010. Este esquema, Cuatro Sabios, es un proceso colaborativa de lluvia de ideas que específicamente es útil para equipos de liderazgo cuando el grupo está confrontando una crisis con la potencia a desestabilizar la organización entera o enfrenta una barrera inesperada a su estrategia.

Todavía hay espacios para los talleres Avanzados programados para el principio del 2012 en EEUU (Los Ángeles, 24 de Febrero) y en la Ciudad de México (Enero 21). Además, el segundo taller de la serie de México (Estrella de Evaluación) está programado para el 18- 19 de Enero en la Ciudad de México. Car Wash Workers Victory, the Fight against LAPD Spying and more
Victory for Carwasheros – Now You Can Get a CLEAN Carwash!
October 25, 2011 was an historic moment for carwash workers in Los Angeles; it marked the first contract won by the CLEAN (Community Labor Environmental Action Network) Campaign. The contract makes Los Angeles County home to the only unionized carwash in the country. Under the terms of the new agreement, workers at Bonus Car Wash will become official members of the United Steelworkers. The contract includes a wage increase, health and safety protections, and grievance and arbitration procedures to resolve problems. The contract also provides important protections for immigrant workers and establishes rights that protect workers from being unfairly punished or dismissed.

But there’s still work to do, Enlace has been involved in this fight since the beginning as a member of the Advisory Board and we will be there until the end. It is everyone’s job to make sure that Bonus remains a successful model carwash. Stop LAPD Spying

The LAPD’s Special Order 11, issued in March 2008, spearheaded the national Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) initiative. The Special Order provides for training of LAPD officers and authorizes them to gather street-level intelligence and information, based upon what is termed “observed behavior.” These behaviors include such everyday activities as drawing diagrams, taking notes, pictures or video footage, or using cameras or binoculars. LCAN, YJC, IDEPSCA, Enlace, and others in Los Angeles have come together to develop the Campaign to Rescind Special Order 11. As a growing private-public partnership threatens to repress individuals and grow a police state, we must organize to stop the growing trend of information gathering and sharing. Colombian Human Rights Group condemns Proposed Private Prison Construction
Franklin Castañeda, President of Political Prisoners Solidarity Committee (PPSC), visited the United States in October 2011 to denounce current plans to build up to six new private prisons in Colombia. Franklin stated that the US Bureau of Prisons has been visiting Colombia to advise on the construction of new prisons and that Colombia is looking to contract private prison companies to build and manage the prisons. The PPSC, a human rights foundation first established in 1973, has risen to the defense of trade unionists, human rights defenders, and other activists that have been targeted by the Colombian government for their political involvement. El día 25 de Octubre del 2011 fue un momento histórico para los carwasheros en Los Ángeles, marco el primer contrato sindical de la campaña de CLEAN (Red de Acción Comunitaria, Laboral y Ambiental). El Contrato convierte al Condado de Los Ángeles como el único con un lava carros sindicalizado en el país. Bajo los términos del acuerdo, trabajadores de Bonus Car Wash serán miembros oficiales de Trabajadores de Acero Unidos. El contrato incluye incrementos de salario, protección de salud y seguridad, y procedimientos de queja y arbitraje para resolver problemas. El contrato también provee protecciones importantes para trabajadores migrantes y establece derechos que protegen a trabajadores de ser injustamente castigados o despedidos.

Pero aun hay trabajo que hacer, Enlace ha estado envuelto en esta lucha desde el principio como miembro de la Mesa Asesora y estará allí hasta el final. Es el trabajo de todos asegurar que Bonus sea un modelo exitoso de lava carros. Alto al Espionaje del LAPD

Orden Especial 11 del LAPD, expedida en Marzo del 2008, encabezo la iniciativa nacional de Reportajes de Actividad Sospechosa (SAR). La Orden Especial provee entrenamiento a diputados del LAPD y los autoriza a juntar inteligencia e información, basado en lo que según es “comportamiento observado.” Estos comportamientos incluyen actividades cotidianas como dibujar diagramas, tomar notas, fotografiar o grabar video, o utilizar cámaras o prismáticos. LCAN, YJC, IDEPSCA, Enlace y otros en Los Ángeles se han unido para desarrollar la Campaña para Revocar la Orden Especial 11. Una creciente colaboración privada-publica amenaza a reprimir individuos y crecer el estado policiaco, de tal debemos organizar para poner fin a la moda de juntar y compartir información. Grupo Colombiano de Derechos Humanos condena Propuesta de Construir Prisiones Privadas
Franklin Castañeda, Presidente de de la Fundación Comité de Solidaridad con los Presos Políticos (PPSC), visito a los Estados Unidos en Octubre del 2011 para denunciar los planes actuales de construir hasta 6 nuevas prisiones privadas en Colombia. Franklin declaro que la Agencia de Prisiones EEUU ha visitado a Colombia para aconsejar la construcción de las nuevas prisiones y que Colombia está buscando empresas para construir y manejar las prisiones. El PPSC, una fundación de derechos humanas establecida en 1973, ha surgido a la defensa de sindicalistas, defensores de derechos humanos, y otros activistas que han sido atacados por el gobierno Colombiano por su involucramiento político.
