Enlace Institute

We have now completed the second year of Enlace’s Peer Trainer Program. More than 35 leaders from organizations that serve low-wage communities who participated in our Enlace Institute Peer Trainer Program learned and applied strategic collaboration tools that substantially advanced the social justice work in their communities.

Here are a few examples:
Aquilina Soriano of Pilipino Workers Center in Los Angeles used what she learned in the Peer Trainers Program to gain access for marginalized members of her community to participate in the Green Workforce Cooperative in L.A.

Lilliam Juarez, an organizer for the Workplace Project on Long Island, New York, applied her new skills in a number of ways with members of the WPP’s Housecleaners Cooperative: to help them make a marketing plan, to train them to make public presentations, and to pressure Nassau County to get better enforcement of the county Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.

In Mexico City, Sindicato de Trabajadores de Casas Comerciales, Oficinas y Expendios, Similares y Conexos del Districto Federal (STRACC) is organizing the city’s gas station attendants who are not paid a salary and work only for tips. Victor Hugo Castillo Lopez, one of the gasoline workers, says: These trainings help us to grow at a personal and social justice level; they are focused to improve the lives of workers who daily struggle for their labor rights by giving them tools so they can fight.

Amanda Garcés of IDEPSCA in Los Angeles, sums up the impact of the Peer Trainer Program: The trainings take you out of the bubble that you are in; … you can see new possibilities - thinking of things that you hadn’t thought of before, imagining a different way to organize the passion that you have and the work that you do every day. Ya hemos completado el segundo año del Programa de Entrenadores Colegas de Enlace. Más de 35 líderes de organizaciones de comunidades de bajos recursos que participaron en nuestro Programa de Entrenadores Colegas del Instituto de Enlace aprendieron y aplicaron herramientas colaborativas estratégicas que avanzan substancialmente el trabajo de justicia social en sus comunidades.

Algunos ejemplos:
Aquilina Soriana de Centro de Trabajadores Filipinos en Los Ángeles utilizo lo que aprendió en el Programa de Entrenadores Colegas para lograr acceso a miembros marginados de su comunidad para participar en la Cooperativa de Plantilla Verde en L.A.

Lilliam Juarez, una organizadora para el Centro de Derechos Laborales en Long Island, Nueva York, aplico sus herramientas en diferentes maneras con sus miembros de la Cooperativa de Trabajadoras Domesticas: para ayudarles a crear un plan del mercadotecnia, para entrenarlas para hacer presentaciones en público, y para presionar al Condado de Nassau para mejorar su aplicación de la Carta de Derechos de Trabajadoras Domesticas del condado.

En la Ciudad de México, Sindicato de Trabajadores de Casas Comerciales, Oficinas y Expendios, Similares y Conexos del Distrito Federal (STRACC) está organizando trabajadores de las gasolineras de la ciudad que no ganaron salario sino trabajan solo de propinas. Víctor Hugo Castillo López, uno de los trabajadores de la gasolinera dice: Estos entrenamientos nos ayudan a crecer al nivel personal y al nivel de justicia social; están enfocados para mejorar las vidas de trabajadores, que diariamente luchan por sus derechos laborales, previéndoles las herramientas que necesitan para luchar.

Enlace in the Fight to Decriminalize Immigrants
2010 was a busy year for immigrant rights organizations and allies. Enlace staff participated on the ground in organizing efforts against SB 1070 in Arizona. Together with volunteers and interns, Enlace researched and discovered connections between private prison companies owned by hedge funds, mega banks and other Wall Street institutions and the increased criminalization of immigrant communities.

Peter Cervantes-Gautschi, executive director of Enlace, published articles in the the Center for International Policy’s Americas Program and Social Policy Magazine with the research findings and analysis of the behind the scenes work of the private prison industry in advancing anti-immigrant legislation at federal and state levels.

Enlace staff Daniel Carrillo participated in a civil disobedience in Los Angeles, CA protesting the increasing criminalization of immigrants and communities of color. He, along with 33 other organizers and activists, face misdemeanor charges for their participation in civil disobediences. Sign the petition demanding all charges be dropped.

The passage of SB 1070, although an injunction partially restricted the law, inspired other states to consider similar legislation. Enlace began to work in partnership with NDLON and other allies to research and strategize on an effective focus for plans to put an end to these hate-motivated legislative efforts across the U.S.A.Top

Enlace en la Lucha contra la Criminalización de Inmigrantes
El año 2010 fue un año muy ocupado para organizaciones y aliados de derechos para los migrantes. El personal de Enlace participo en esfuerzos organizativos contra SB1070 en Arizona. Junto con voluntarios e internos, Enlace investigo y descubrió conexiones entre empresas de cárceles privadas propiedad de fundos de protección, mega bancos, y otras instituciones de Wall Street y el incremento de la criminalización de comunidades migrantes.

Peter Cervantes-Gautschi, director ejecutivo de Enlace, publico artículos en el Programa de las Américas del Centro de Póliza Internacional y la Revista de Póliza Social con conclusiones y análisis del trabajo detrás del escenario de la industria de cárceles privadas en avanzar legislación anti-migrante en los niveles federales y estatales.

Personal de Enlace Daniel Carrillo participo en una desobediencia civil en Los Ángeles, CA protestando por el incremento de la criminalización de migrantes y comunidades de color. El, junto con otros 33organizadores y activistas, enfrentan cargos de delitos mayores por su participación en desobediencias civiles. Firma la petición exigiendo que retiren todos los cargos.

El pasaje de SB 1070, aunque fue parcialmente restringida por la ley, inspira a otros estados a considerar legislaciones similares. Enlace comenzó a trabajo en colaboración con NDLON y otros aliados para investigar y buscar una estrategia en un enfoque efectivo para planear como poner fin a los esfuerzos legislativos motivados por odio a través de E.E.U.U.

The Struggle in the Rubber Industry

In Mexico the companies that produce tires are governed by contract law that is regulated by the government. The contract law of the rubber industry is one of the best union contracts in the Mexican republic, but sadly its existence is being threatened and the government supports these efforts.

The four plants that belong to Tornel have independent unions, but some corrupt unions are demanding the ownership of the contract, which would result in weakening the independent union.

In the last three years the company Tornel has gone through two union elections for ownership of the contract against the CTM (corrupt charro union), in which the independent union emerged victorious. This corrupt union along with the employers, continues their efforts to destabilize the workers and this year again resulted in another vote.

The most interesting point of this struggle is that the worst enemy of the Tornel workers is the government. The government wants to eliminate all unions that are fighting for worker rights. One example is, the case of the miners who have been attacked in all sides. In addition, there is also the case of the Mexican Electrician Union, where the government dismantled the company “Luz y Fuerza” leaving more than 44,000 workers without work.

Now the government is attacking the rubber industry.

One of the tactics is to remove tire tariffs for China which sells their tires cheaper than Mexican tires. And another is that they are working on destroying the contract law which expires on February 12, 2011.
For workers to be able to continue with this contract there has to be a meeting for revision and for this to happen the Labor Secretary Javier Lozano Alarcón has to authorize the meeting in the official government journal, which he is refusing to do. At this moment, preparation for a strike has been made to pressure the Labor Secretary Javier Lozano Alarcón to schedule a date to review the contract law.

Another interesting point is that the government allows entry of used tires from the United States. These tires cause competition in prices, contamination of the environment, and danger on the roads.

This year Enlace staff participated in four meetings with the executive committee of the Tornel union for creating strategic plans and giving trainings to strengthen the committee members. Enlace and the Tornel union are working together to win recognition of the contract law, prevent the tires from China to have any effect on Mexican workers and win the fight against the corrupt charro unions.

One final interesting point: The tire company Tornel belongs to JK Tyre a multinational corporation based in India that is one of the largest exporters of tires with customers in over 80 countries.Top

La Lucha en la Industria de Hule

En México las empresas que elaboran llantas, se rigen por un contrato ley que está regulado por el gobierno. Este contrato ley de la industria del hule es uno de los mejores que existen en la republica mexicana, pero desgraciadamente está siendo amenazado por destituirlo y el gobierno apoya esta práctica.

Las cuatro plantas que pertenecen a Tornel tiene sindicato independiente, pero algunos sindicatos charros están demandando la titularidad del contrato provocando debilitamiento entre el sindicato independiente.

En los últimos tres años la empresa Tornel ha pasado por dos recuentos de titularidad de contrato contra la CTM (sindicato charro), en los cuales ha salido victorioso el sindicato independiente. El sindicato charro junto con los empresarios continúa su carrera para desestabilizar a los trabajadores y este año tuvieron que recurrir a otra votación.

Pero el punto más interesante en esta lucha es que el peor enemigo de los trabajadores es el propio gobierno. El gobierno quiere acabar con todos los sindicatos que están luchando por los derechos de los trabajadores. Un ejemplo es el caso de los mineros que han sido golpeados en todos los sentidos. También tenemos el caso del Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas donde el gobierno por decreto ordeno la extinción de Luz y Fuerza, dejando sin trabajo a más de 44,000 trabajadores.

Ahora el gobierno está golpeando a la Industria del hule.

Una de sus maniobras es quitar los aranceles a las llantas providentes de China quienes venden sus llantas mas baratas que las mexicanas. Por otro lado también está trabajando en destituir el contrato ley que vence el 12 de Febrero del 2011.
Para que los trabajadores puedan continuar con este contrato que tiene que haber una revisión y para lograr esta revisión el Secretario de Trabajo Javier Lozano Alarcón tiene que autorizar la reunión en el diario oficial del gobierno, y esto también se niega a realizarlo. En estos momentos ya se hizo el emplazamiento a huelga, para presionar al Secretario de Trabajo Javier Lozano Alarcón para que de la fecha para la revisión del contrato ley.

Otro punto interesante es que también el gobierno permite el paso de llantas de segundo uso de Estados Unidos. Estas llantas provocan competición en los precios, contaminación del ambiente, y peligros en las carreteras.

Enlace y el sindicato Tornel están trabajando juntos para lograr el reconocimiento del contrato ley, lograr que las llantas provenientes de China no afecten a los trabajadores mexicanos y ganar la lucha contra el sindicalismo charro. En este año, el personal de Enlace estuvo por cuatro ocasiones reunido con el comité directivo del sindicato Tornel realizando planes de trabajo y dando entrenamientos para fortalecer el comité.

Finalmente un dato interesante - La Llantera Tornel pertenece a JK Tyre una corporación multinacional basada en India, que es uno de los mayores exportadores de neumáticos con clientes en más de 80 países. Top

Domestic Workers United
On July 1, 2010 the New York State Legislature passed the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights (A1470B/S2311E). After 6 years of organizing by domestic workers together with unions, employers, clergy and community organizations, the New York State Legislature came down on the side of justice. Finally, domestic workers are recognized as real workers under the law. New York becomes the first to recognize Domestic Workers! Visit their website for more information.

IDEPSCA
In November 2010 Mobile Voices/Voces Móviles, the microblogging project designed in collaboration with USC Annenberg and the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA) won a United Nations-sponsored World Summit Award for innovative mobile applications.

Mobile Voices is an open-source platform that lets mobile phone users post text, photo and video content to a publicly available website. Day laborers and household workers across Los Angeles, as well as members of the Los Angeles Community Action Network (LACAN), have used the interface to report news, distribute information and share stories about their work, lives, and their points of view.

“This effort has been transformative and inspiring,” said Amanda Garces, Mobile Voices project manager at IDEPSCA. “Winning this award truly reflects the essence of the Mobile Voices project. IDEPSCA’s popular education methodology has created the path for the workers to become subjects of their own reality. The workers truly live IDEPSCA’s motto of reading reality to write their own history. Their commitment is invaluable.”

The awards are given by the United Nations in recognition of online and mobile content that promotes global digital access and inclusion in the communication revolution, especially in developing countries and underserved communities. More than 420 products from nearly 100 countries were considered for awards.

Continental Independent Union
The National Union of General Tire Workers in Mexico (SNTGTM) defeated a corrupt “charro” union by a total of 640 votes against 1 in the latest union election on August 6, 2010. In addition the independent union also fought against the General Tire plant for illegally terminating 52 workers, thus far half of them have be reinstalled in the plant due to the efforts of the union.

Enlace is working with General Tire (Enlace ally) and Tornel (Enlace member) Independent Unions on a campaign to defend the national contract and working standards in the rubber industry.

IDEPSCA
En Noviembre del 2010 Voces Móviles, un proyecto desinado en colaboración con USC Annenberg y el Instituto de Educación Popular del Sur de California (IDEPSCA) gano el Premio de la Cumbre Mundial de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para aplicaciones innovadoras móviles.

Voces Móviles es una plataforma libre que permite a usuarios de teléfonos móviles a poner texto, fotos, y videos en sitios públicos. Jornaleros y trabajadoras del hogar de Los Ángeles, como también miembros de la Red de Acción Comunitaria de Los Ángeles (LACAN), lo han utilizado para compartir noticias, distribuir información y compartir historias sobre su trabajo, vida y sus puntos de vista.

“Este esfuerzo ha sido transformador y una inspiración,” dijo Amanda Garcés, directora del proyecto Voces Móviles de IDEPSCA. “Ganar este premio verdaderamente refleja la esencia del proyecto de Voces Móviles. La metodología de educación popular de IDEPSCA ha creado un camino para que trabajadores sean sujetos de su propia realidad. Los trabajadores realmente viven el lema de IDEPSCA de leyendo la realidad para escribir su propia historia. Su dedicación es invalorable.”

Este premio fue entregado por las Naciones Unidas en reconocimiento de contenido del internet y teléfonos móviles que promueven acceso digital global e inclusión en la revolución de comunicaciones, especialmente en países en desarrollo y comunidades marginalizadas. Más de 420 productos de casi 100 países fueron considerados por los premios.

Sindicato Independiente Continental
El Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de General Tire de México derroto a un sindicato charro por 640 a 1 votos en las elecciones del 6 de agosto del 2010. Adicionalmente el sindicato independiente ha estado luchando contra General Tire por la despida ilegal de 52 trabajadores, por lo tanto 50 de ellos han sido reinstalados gracias a los esfuerzos del sindicato.
Enlace está trabajando con los sindicatos independientes de trabajadores en General Tire (aliado de Enlace) y Tornel (Miembro de Enlace) para defender el contrato ley y estándares de trabajo en la industria de hule.Top
