Enlace in the Fight to Decriminalize Immigrants
On Friday, July 30, 2010 the Republican Governors Association sent out a nationwide solicitation written by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer requesting contributions to fund an appeal of the partial injunction issued by a judge against SB1070.

Although some of the law’s worst provisions were stalled, the ruling was by no means a solid victory. Thousands gathered all over the country and around the world to protest the wave of anti-immigrant and people of color sentiment in the US that is creating racist laws and breeding a rise in terrorist white supremacist groups.

Enlace en la Lucha contra la Criminalización de Inmigrantes
El viernes 30 de Julio del 2010 la Asociación de Gobernadores Republicanos enviaron una solicitación escrita al nivel nacional redactada por la Gobernadora de Arizona Jan Brewer pidiendo contribuciones para financiar una apelación de la orden restrictiva contra SB1070 de la juez.

Aunque algunas de las provisiones mas fuertes de la ley fueron bloqueadas, la decisión no es en ninguna forma una victoria sólida. Miles se unieron en todo el país y alrededor del mundo para protestar la ola de sentimiento contra inmigrantes y personas de color en EEUU que esta creando leyes racistas y apoyando el crecimiento de grupos terroristas de supremacía blanca.

Enlace Institute launches its Second Year!

This year the Institute will teach the Organizing Cycle and Proactive Plan frameworks to peer trainers in Mexico and the US. Both frameworks help groups develop strategic plans, one for the short term, the other for up to a year. To read about them, please visit our training section. Thus far we have completed the first session of year two, teaching the Organizing Cycle to peer trainers in Bend, Oregon, New York City and Queretaro, Mexico.

The Institute is proving to have a significant impact on the work of the peer trainers and their organizations. We have been successful in our goals of helping to build low wage organizations so that they could make significant gains in their own fights. ¡El Instituto de Enlace emprendió su Segundo Año!

Este año el Instituto va a enseñar los esquemas de Ciclo de Organizar y el Plan Proactivo a entrenadores colegas en México y EEUU. Ambos esquemas ayudan a grupos a desarrollar planes estratégicos, uno para corto plazo y el otro para un largo plazo. Para leer sobre ellos, por favor de visitar nuestra sección sobre entrenamientos. Hasta hoy hemos completado la primera sesión del segundo año, enseñando el Ciclo de Organizar a entrenadores colegas en Bend, Oregón, la Cuidad de Nueva York y Querétaro, México.

Tornel: The Fight for Independent Unions

Enlace and Independent Union Tornel have partnered, in alliance with the Independent Unions General Tire and Continental, in an international campaign against the India-based multinational JK and German-based Continental to halt abusive practices and to treat workers with respect and dignity. The campaign aims to defend labor standards for thousands of workers in the rubber industry. Both unions represent workers from tire plants in Mexico and are organizing to preserve the contract law overseeing the rubber industry that covers thousands of workers in Mexico.

For various reasons the JK and Continental companies have attempted to remove independent unions. They have tried to force “protection” contracts to displace the contact law; a protection contract is a corrupt agreement between an illegitimate union and an employer that guarantees dues for the union, but takes away workers’ rights. The JK and Continental workers have demonstrated they will not accept corrupt “charro” unions.

In the last attempt at the Continental Plant to remove the independent union (August 6, 2010), the result was surprising: 640 votes in favor of the independent union and 1 vote against, a result never before seen. This demonstrates the unity of workers and their desire to continue with the representation of their union.

Recently Enlace staff travelled to Mexico to develop a strategic international campaign plan and to train the Tornel Union’s central committee and Continental Union’s leaders in Enlace’s high performance frameworks. Workers in the Tornel plants have been engaging in negotiations with management over working conditions and developing a plan for the upcoming elections against a corrupt “charro” union. Top

Tornel: La Lucha por los Sindicatos Independientes

Enlace y el Sindicato Independiente de Tornel están trabajando juntos, y en alianza con los Sindicatos Independientes de General Tire y Continental, en una lucha internacional para presionar a la multinacional JK basada en India y Continental basada en Alemania para acabar con prácticas abusivas y que traten a trabajadores con respeto y dignidad. La lucha quiere defender los estándares laborales para miles de trabajadores en la industria de hule. Ambos sindicatos representan trabajadores en plantas de llantas en México y están organizando para que se les respete el contrato ley de la industria de hule, que incluye a miles de trabajadores en la Republica Mexicana.

Por varias ocasiones las empresas JK y Continental han tratado de destituir a los sindicatos independientes. Han tratando de imponer contratos de protección para poder destituir el contrato ley pero los trabajadores han demostrado que no aceptaran sindicatos charros.

En el último intento de la planta Continental (Agosto 6 del 2010) por destruir el sindicato independiente, el resultado fue sorprendente, 640 votos a favor del sindicato independiente y 1 voto en contra una votación nunca antes vista. Esto demuestra la unidad de los trabajadores y su deseo por continuar con la representación de su sindicato.

Recientemente personal de Enlace viajo a México para desarrollar un plan internacional estratégico y para entrenar al comité central del Sindicato de Tornel y lideres de Continental en los esquemas de alto rendimiento de Enlace. Trabajadores en las plantas de Tornel ha estado negociando con la gerencia sobre condiciones de trabajo, y están realizando una estrategia para la próxima votación que tendrán contra un sindicato charo. Enlace at US Social Forum
Mary Mendez, along with representatives of most of Enlace’s U.S. based member organizations, participated in the Social Forum in Detroit, Michigan, an industrial city located near the US- Canada border, a city filled with old buildings erected during capitalism’s grand era of the automobile industry, which today is decaying. In this city one finds disintegrated and empty neighborhoods due to the labor crisis.

Detroit, which had a population of 2 million in the mid 1950’s, now has a population of around 800,000. Poverty, unemployment, and depopulation have given rise to an almost post-apocalyptic panorama.

Enlace en el Foro Social de EEUU
Mary Méndez, junto con representantes de varias organizaciones miembros de Enlace, participo en el Foro Social de Detroit-Michigan, ciudad industrial situada en los límites con la República de Canadá, está cargada de imponentes edificios levantados en épocas de esplendor del capitalismo manufacturero, cuya expresión fue su industria automovilística, hoy en decadencia. En esta ciudad encontramos aéreas íntegras de barrios de vivienda que se encuentran desocupadas por la crisis laboral.

Detroit, que tenía 2 millones de habitantes a mediados de los 50, ahora ha disminuido su población a alrededor de 800.000 habitantes. La pobreza, el desempleo, la despoblación y la decadencia han provocado un panorama casi post-apocalíptico.
