SF Day Laborer and Domestic Worker Protest Anti-Immigration Laws

SAN FRANCISCO DAY LABORERS AND DOMESTIC WORKERS SIT ON PUBLIC SIDEWALKS UP AND DOWN CESAR CHAVEZ STREET TO EXPRESS OUTRAGE OVER RECENT LAWS THAT CRIMINALIZE IMMIGRANTS: SAN FRANCISCO’S “SIT-LIE” LAW AND ARIZONA’S ANTI-IMMIGRANT LAW.
On Saturday, April 24, 2010, 9 am to Noon, members of the San Francisco Day Labor Program and the Women’s Collective, will hold a public demonstration up and down Cesar Chavez Street, between Mission and South Van Ness Streets, in order to denounce San Francisco’s proposal to criminalize anyone who sits or lies on a public sidewalk, as well as the recently passed Arizona law, which now makes it criminal for undocumented immigrants to be present in Arizona. Dozens of workers and their supporters are expected to sit on the sidewalks and picnic, play music, and conduct other activities.
At noon, the workers will hold a press conference at the SF Day Labor Program, 3358 Cesar Chavez St., to express outrage over the further criminalization of undocumented immigrants, giving San Francisco and Arizona as examples.
Day laborers in San Francisco have to sit down once in awhile when they’re out on street corners waiting for work,” exclaims Jose Ramirez, a day laborer and Coordinator of the SF Day Labor Program. “Taking us to jail for sitting down in San Francisco is the same as immigrants being targeted by police for simply being Latino.”
San Francisco’s “sit-lie” proposal, which calls for fines and jail time for anyone sitting or lying on San Francisco’s sidewalks, is currently pending
before the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. If it passes, it will have a chilling impact on day laborers’ ability to look for work.
The Arizona legislature recently passed a law which allows local law enforcement to arrest and report people to Immigration if they are “suspected” to be undocumented. The Arizona law also makes it illegal to look for work as a day laborer, or to hire day laborers.
